Alright everyone, here's where you can post your review of -9-. What did you like & why, what did you not like & why. How did they do with their animation principles? How was the story?

  1. Animation was great!it was pure eye candy! there were two things that caught my attention however.
The slow motion when 7 appeared to cut the Cat thing was kinda cheesy to me. Also at the end when 9 released the others their appearances changed. They were still alright, but the fact that they lost their cloth/skin pattern made them look unfinished and look like the green ghost thing from ghost busters.
The storyline was o.k to me. I enjoyed the sense of hopelessness for the character's as it was different from the norm. though the feeling of being detached to them was a bit different.
Because of the bleak and dark situation the movie was trying to portray, I thought the love interest between 7 and 9 didn't belong in the plot.
The change in atmosphere after they thought they killed the "Brain" for the first time came to suddenly. Going from nightmarish situation to prancing merrily on a record player, made me think ,wow, they got over that pretty fast...
I really liked the black and white flashbacks with the humans fighting the awesome robots that reminded me of the little pod racer repair bots from star wars.

I think the thing people will remember most from this film would be the, scary ass, skeleton cobra thing with a doll skull. If they had made the rest of the movie with that kind of nightmarish appeal. I believe the movie would have been a bigger hit.

  2. I really enjoyed 9, though the trailer made it out to have more action. I think I would have liked it more had I not seen the trailer before hand.
The animation was amazing really. The characters felt so real to me, even down to the facial animation. The subtleties in the face movements really sold it. Part of me is tired of seeing the slow motion used for high action scenes, but I liked it in this. I felt they pulled it off well, using it only on a few parts.
I would have liked to have more time just seeing the character on screen. Especially the Twins. I just didn't have enough time to grow attached to the characters, so when a couple of them died, I wasn't like I would have been if 9 or 7 died.
The concept of the movie was the best part, and not knowing everything that really happened in the war before the humans died out and learning parts as you go along was cool. It was like solving a mystery to me, which I enjoy doing.

    Good:
    -Beautiful Animation and environments
    -Character Design was wonderful
    -Concept was different
    -Story was fast paced.
    Bad:
-Not enough build up to action sequences
    -Left feeling not fulfilled
    -Not enough attachment to characters

    Overall, I would give 9 a 8/10.

  3. Overall, I was satisfied with 9 but it did not live up to my expectations, but then again, when you show most of the action scenes backed with Coheed & Cambria (favorite band <3) in the trailer, you would have to pull out something really, really special.
I would have liked a little more character depth and for the plot to slow down a bit. Also, for a dark animated movie, it was a little too childish still, in my opinion. I would have liked to see more gloomy, dreary, dark scenes.
I watched the movie twice and both times noticed that 9 fell awkwardly fast during the scene when 5 was looking at him through the telescope.
The animation expressing weight and texture was consistent, fluid, and seemed accurate but I didn't like the flailing arms when some of the characters' souls were being taken. It seemed too comical for my taste. I also didn't like the texture mapping. Although you can't expect the modelers to create every hole in the cloth on the characters, I still couldn't help but notice how the thread holes stretched and morphed unnaturally when the characters' bodies moved.
I was also unimpressed by the fire used for explosions. It seemed like it was attempted to be made as realistic-looking as possible but failed.
As for the lighting, it was beautiful and probably my favorite part aesthetics-wise. Another positive thing was the creativity of the machine/creatures. They looked sharp and scary yet looked like they actually functioned if made in real life.
Although there were many things I think could have been improved, it was still a decent film.

  4. 9 Review
    Beverly Heath

As part of the Animation club, I had the chance to view the new 3D animation titled 9. Everyone who will read this review has most likely already seen the movie and I feel no need to give a brief summary of the movie plot.
Overall, I thought the movie was an interesting. It already had points with me for being an original story in a period where all we see is remade storylines and sequels. 9 was a fresh breath of air in a stagnant industry that has seemingly dried up. Anyway, to the review:
The story was a told in a very different way than what I was view as traditional. I compare it to skipping ahead into a novel and reading from the half way point. Or even having it being a two book series and reading the second book as a standalone. It doesn’t make the movie bad; it just made it harder for me to care about any of the characters. Yes, the characters were cool in their own respect but there was not enough emotional attachment to make me care if they died (which most of them did). I was more interested in the scientist that started the whole thing and the machine that destroyed the world. What happened to the Machine to make it corrupt and even how the first eight sack people survived before 9 was created. Good characters, mediocre story and somewhat anti-climatic. Overall it wasn’t a bad movie, just not as exciting as I thought it would be in the end.
I honestly would have wait for it to come out on DVD and rent it.

  5. In going to see 9 and seeing the previews, I had high hopes. It looked like great animation, a great concept and great characters.
Looking at the animation, in the beginning it seemed a little over the top. There were a few jumps of the main character that looked over animated. The rest of the movie, however, was done very well. It was so realistic and believable. There were arcs, anticipation, expression, minor squash & stretch. Truly great.
The concept of the movie was brilliant. It is another post apocalyptic movie, but it was a different take on it. It had so much potential, but this is where it started to fail. The story became more and more contrived as it went on. It became predictable and had some really stupid plot points. The worst one was right at the end when the dead numbers became ghosts. It was trying to get a sense of closure to the movie after all the death, but it just became cliché.
Lastly, the characters were created to be very interesting, but they had no development. The characters were dieing off so much and so soon before we started to care about them. And the ones that were left over seemed to have a back-story, but for some reason I didn’t care about it. The characters had the potential for depth, but they never reached it.
Overall, this movie was disappointing. It seemed like it would be a hit, but it wasn’t. We went there a week after it opened and we were almost the only people in the theatre. Word to the producers and all others involved, develop characters. It doesn’t matter how cool it looks or how well it’s animated, you need good characters.

  6. This is from Darcy:
In seeing 9 I was able to see things that I have learned through club or classes in action. Things like; when the characters where jumping their arches were done well or at least to a point where they looked well done. Also they used a lot of colors to explain the mood or setting and used very simplistic shapes for major characters. All in all it seemed well put together but also still kept a simple style.
I also liked how they incorporated both 2D and 3D in this film. The major portion of the show was in 3D or what appeared 3D. However, for little parts where they showed the flashbacks or history, the film got a more 2D feel to it. And yet it still seemed to fit. This made it look like an old add being replayed so I found it creative. Yet their 3D was very well done….at least I thought so. Like the hand of the scientist or even minimal things like the textures of the main characters.
It was a very good learning experience, and having known some things about animation your eyes seem to look for things without realizing it while your watching.
